Spring is the perfect time to clear out the clutter! Who knows, you might even have a little fun doing it...

Spring symbolizes renewal and growth, making it an ideal season to refresh your surroundings. Clutter can cause stress, reduce productivity, and make your home feel smaller and less welcoming. By decluttering, you create space for new experiences and a calmer atmosphere. This process also helps you identify what truly matters, allowing you to focus on items and activities that bring joy and usefulness.

Preparing for Your Declutter Session

Before you start, set clear goals for what you want to achieve. Decide which rooms or areas need the most attention. Gather supplies such as boxes, bags, labels, and cleaning materials. Plan your time realistically—decluttering can be overwhelming if you try to do everything at once. Break the task into manageable chunks, such as focusing on one room or category per day.

Effective Decluttering Techniques

Start with Surfaces

Kitchen counters, dining tables, coffee tables, end tables, bathroom counters, dressers, nightstands....these are all easy places to "dump," and are often full of various categories of "stuff."

  1. Clear everything off and clean

  2. Touch each item. Ask yourself: do I use or need this? Does it bring me joy and I will use or display it? Or is it sentimental? (sentimental items that will be put in a box and never looked at should be limited)

  3. Decide: keep, donate, or trash/recycle

If you are tempted to sell something, make sure the $ you will receive is worth the effort, and don't delay. Otherwise, the "clutter" will remain.

  4. Put each item in an intentional "home." Where, when and with what does this item get used? Place most in a cabinet, drawer, etc.. Limit the surface to only decorative items, and very limited daily use items.

Use the Four-Box Method

Label four boxes (or bags) as: Move, Donate, Recycle, Trash. You can add a Sell category, if you deem necessary, but I recommend limiting this option. You can even add an "undecided" category, if you get stuck on an item. This will keep the progress moving.

Choose a room or category to start with. Maybe your bathroom or kitchen or closet are overwhelming and causing stress in your daily routines. Or maybe you'd rather start with a category (that has spread into multiple spaces): clothing, shoes, bags, books, shoes, paper piles... You might feel like you don't know how or where to start. Just pick up one item at a time. If the items should stay in the current space, create temporary piles according to categories that are appropriate. If it's an item that you are going to keep, but it should go in a different area, place it in the "move" box. Use the other boxes for items that you are letting go of.

Once you know what items are being kept, and you have them separated into categories, create an intentional home for every single item.

Short on Time or Energy: Timer Method

Set a timer for 10-15 minutes, walk through the house with a trash bag and look on surfaces, in drawers, on the floor etc... and toss items that need to go and are unworthy of donating. (When donating items, please consider if it's an item you would want to use second-hand, in it's current condition.) If it takes longer and you have more time, keep going...

Set a timer for 20 minutes, walk through the house looking for items that are no longer serving you and should be donated, so others can put them to good use.

Maintaining a Clutter-Free Home

Decluttering is not a one-time event. To maintain a tidy home, develop daily habits such as:

  • Putting things back in their place immediately

  • Regularly reviewing possessions for items to remove

  • Limiting new purchases to essentials or meaningful items

Set aside time each month for a quick declutter session to prevent buildup.

How Decluttering Benefits Your Mind

A clean, organized space reduces distractions and mental fatigue. It can improve focus, creativity, and overall mood. Decluttering also gives a sense of accomplishment and control, which supports mental well-being. By creating a peaceful environment, you invite relaxation and improved productivity into your home.

Remember, progress is more important than perfection. If you just can't quite get it done on your own, Simply Inspired is here for you.

Happy Decluttering!

All my best,
